Wendy Barker's collections of poetry include Let the Ice Speak, Winter Chickens, and Way of Whiteness, which won the Violet Crown Book Award for 2000. Among her other honors and awards are fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Mary Elinore Smith Poetry Prize from The American Scholar. Her poems and translations have appeared in such journals as Poetry, Kenyon Review, North American Review, and New York Quarterly; her work has been frequently anthologized and has been translated into Hindi, Japanese, and Bulgarian. A collection of translations (with Saranindranath Tagore) from Bengali, Rabindranath Tagore: Final Poems, was released in November 2001. She has published a critical study, Lunacy of Light: Emily Dickinson and the Experience of Metaphor, and, with Sandra M. Gilbert, has edited a collection of essays, The House Is Made of Poetry: The Art of Ruth Stone. During the fall of 2000 she served as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer in Bulgaria. She is a professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
